Mortimer Connection

This interesting Mortimer genealogy will most likely reveal the roots of Governor Thomas Dale. Most of the chapters in our research are linked by the following:

Hugh Mortimer (died 1360) = Eleanor Cornwall of Burford = Sir Richard Croft

o Hugh Mortimer’s grandfather was John Mortimer who was given as a sub tenant of Sir Humphrey de Bohun. De Bohun’s niece, Sybil de Bohun, was the second wife of the famous old knight, Sir Thomas de la Dale who was the guardian of the heir presumptive of England, young Edmund Mortimer, 5th Earl of March. Thomas de la Dale’s holdings seemed to connect to Roger Dale (Collyweston) of Tixover, who was thought related to Dale.

John Mortimer (subtenant of Humphrey de Bohun)

| Roger Mortimer | Bohun’s niece = Sir Thomas de la Dale

| John Mortimer

| Hugh Mortimer (died 1460) = Eleanor Cornwall = Sir Richard Croft

o Thomas Whittington of Mork Lane in Saint Briavels descended from this marriage. Mork Lane was near Clearwell Manor (home of Governor Dale’s brother-in-law), and a William Whittington from this sale clan settled on the Eastern Shore near Dales Gift, the property once owned by Governor Thomas Dale. The grandmother of Lady Dale was Margaret Whittington, also of Whittington of Pauntley.

| Hugh Mortimer (died 1460) = Eleanor Cornwall = Sir Richard Croft

| Elizabeth Croft = John Whittington

| Thomas Whittington of Pauntley

| Alexander Whittington | Margaret Whittington = Sir Thomas Throckmorton

| Richard Whittingon Sir Thomas Throckmorton |

| Thomas Whittington (Monk Lane in St Briavels) Thomas Dale = Elizabeth Throckmorton |

o From our research, it seemed as if Governor Dale was in some fashion connected to Robert Dudley, the 1st Earl of Leicester. I noted that Dudley’s right hand man seemed to be a kinsman, Sir Thomas Blount who appeared to Thomas Blount of Kinlet, husband of Ann Croft. Ann Croft was the daughter of Richard Croft and Eleanor Cornwall. It was this same family that produced Sir Henry Fitzroy, the bastard somof King Henry VIII. Fitzroy lived at Collyweston Palace, and the we know that Roger Dale of Tixover originally was of Collyweston. At Dudley’s state funeral, Sir Thomas Throckmorton, Lady Dale’s father was one of six pall bearers.

| Hugh Mortimer (died 1460) = Eleanor Cornwall = Sir Richard Croft

Thomas (Kinlet) Blount (died 1523) = Ann Croft |

| John Croft (died 1530) | Sir Thomas Blount of Kinlet (Dudley’s man)

| Elizabeth Croft = Henry VIII

| Henry Fitzroy (Collyweston Palace, Roger Dale of Collyweston)

o In 1559, William Dale of London, long thougt related to Dale, mentioned “cousin Elizabeth Kelke.”

| Alyce Grey = William Knyvett (1440-1515)

| Charles Knyvett

| Lucy Knyvett = Henry Gates (Seamer) | Anne Knyvett = Robert Carr Charles Somerset, 1st Worcester

Elizabeth Carre Kelke | | Robert Carr = Mary Somerset | | Henry, 2nd Worcester

| Mary = Edward Dale

o Elizabeth Kelke led to another observation

Henry VIII = Elizabeth Croft = Robert Carr = Anne Knyvett Charles Somerset, 1st Worcester

| Henry Fitzroy Elizabeth Carre Kelke | | Robert Carr = Mary Somerset | | Henry, 2nd

Edward Dale = Mary Somerset|

o I estimated that Governor Dale was born about 1567. In 1566, a Hugh Dale married Margaret Mortimer, and Margaret appears to be the great granddaughter of Hugh Mortimer and Eleanor Cornwall. The Whittingtons of Mork Lane in Saint Briavels (Dale family), and Lady Dale could both claim similar descent. It was then common for distant cousins to marry.

| Hugh Mortimer (died 1460) = Eleanor Cornwall = Sir Richard Croft

| John Mortimer (died 1504)

| John Mortimer (died 1560), the last of the Mortimers of Chirk Manor.

| Margaret Mortimer = Hugh Dale (married 1566)

o We came across the Mortimer family of Chirk Manor in Wales which passed to a Hugh Mortimer (died 1460) who married Eleanor Cornwall (died 1520). Hugh Mortimer’s son was John Mortimer, whose widow remarried Sir Charles Brandon, whose children were tutored by Dr. Thomas Wilson. Wilson was a strong supporter of Robert Dudley.

o Hugh and Eleanor’s grandson was the last male Mortimer to be associated with Chirk Manor. Queen Elizabeth later awarded it to Robert Dudley, Earl of Leicester.

The descent of the Mortimers of Tedstone Wafer from Roger Mortimer of Chirk (d. 1326) was discussed here by Jim Weber and Brice Clagett in
October/November last year

And the line - not given by CP vol. 14 but outlined in Brice's post -

Continues down to John Mortimer (d. 1504), whose sister and (in her issue) heir had married Thomas (West), Lord la Warre (d. 1525).
